Why I am scared of mice - very afraid
84Scared of mice phobia
When I was ten years old my brother Joe suggested we save up our pocket money and buy a pet rabbit. Of course we wouldn't inform Mum and dad: my big brother Joe said it would be a simple case of "fait accompli". I didn't know what this meant but I tried to nod knowingly. Joe had this tremendous depth of knowledge that always reassured me. We speeded up the funding process by hunting down bottles of lemonade that we could redeem in the shops for three pence each, and we quickly raised the money for our pet rabbit.
On the day we were due to set off to the pet shop, Joe explained with impeccable logic that we needn't restrict ourselves to one pet, when with the money we had saved we could have five or six pets. The new plan was to buy five or six mice.
Now, when you have a brother who is brave, daring and all-knowing it is difficult to disagree. I was secretly terrified of mice but how could I admit this to such a brother? My phobia would be seen as a sign of weakness and it would be far too shameful to admit to this. Unlike many phobias, I can trace the mice one back to its source.
One day when I was about 3 years old I told Mum I had seen an animal in the bathroom. Mum asked me how big the animal was and I said it was "as big as a sheep." Mum looked alarmed, imagining there must be a wild dog or some such beast in the house. The next thing Mum goes into the bathroom and screams hysterically. When I had told Mum this animal was as big as a sheep, I neglected to prefix this with the word "toy". Yes, it was indeed a mouse. When I saw Mum panicking I too ran around the house screaming. To this day, I have an irrational fear of mice. The poet, Philip Larkin's words comes to mind. "They f... you up your Mum and Dad", Sorry Mum!
So, we set off for the pet shop and bought six mice in a biscuit tin punched with holes. The brilliant thing about Joe is that his planning is meticulous. Whenever I saw a problem, Joe was always able to show me the solution. I thought we needed to buy a cage to put the mice in but Joe patiently explained that this would only set back our plans.
When we arrived home we went down to the cellar and Joe showed me a metal cabinet that the mice would be able to live in. The brilliant thing was that this metal cage was far roomier than an ordinary cage and it was impossible to break out of, Later on, in the middle of the night, Joe announced that the mice were running all over the cellar. For a moment I mistakenly thought that Joe had made a miscalculation. But I had got it wrong yet again. Joe explained that there were forces at work that I was not aware of; surely I had noticed by now that there were agents at work that continually thwarted his best efforts. Once more I failed to grasp the finer details, but I remember feeling reasured that Joe hadn't let us down.
But who were these mysterious agents at work? Joe told me right now he couldn't reveal all the details and I should be safer if he only informed me about things on a "need to know" basis. I was continually astounded at how Joe could go about his day to day business and not need to unburden himself about all these dark forces.
We never managed to catch the mice and eventually, Mum came across one scurrying around the coal hole. Dad immediately set traps and Mum enticed a stray cat called Lily into the cellar. This cat soon saw off the mice but, unfortunately, presented Mum and Dad with a white one. They knew straightaway that one of us had introduced mice to the house. It didn't take too long to discover that it was Joe and me. I say Joe and me, but somehow in all the chaos it seemed the evidence pointed to me as the main culprit. Joe said that this often happened under the heat of interrogation and that it would simplify matters if I went along with this impression. He was right as usual. The cat went on to have eight kittens, of which we kept two, called Taffy and Toby.
So that's how I came to love cats and be scared of mice.Rabbit rabbit rabbit.

I love your stories-brilliant.
I am afraid of mice . mouse . rat . what ever their difference .
Well written and a great explanation for your phobia. Reminded me of an incident that took place when I was married to my 2nd wife (of 7 to date), Carolyn.
Now, Carolyn is a pretty sharp gal, has worked as both a cosmetologist and as an office secretary, and in 1976 was cutting hair part time and going back to college part time. We lived in a mobile home, had several cats, and I commuted to an office job 45 miles down the road.
Early one fine afternoon, Carolyn opened a kitchen cabinet door at about face height and came eye-to-eye with the Fearsome Mouse. According to her own description of what followed, she screamed, grabbed our white half-grown kitten named Angel, shoved Angel toward the open cabinet door, and shouted repeatedly,
"Get it! Get it! Get it!"
Needless to say, poor Angel was probably the most frightened being in the home at that moment.
I don't recall that we ever did catch that one; we may have actually been the first to move out (not the little rodent) when we traded up to a stick-built house a few months later.
"The next thing Mum goes into the bathroom and screams hysterically. When I had told Mum this animal was as big as a sheep, I neglected to prefix this with the word "toy"." LOL!
Great story! Thanks for a fun hub! :)
Luv the story! I'm also afraid of mice but I have no idea why. I'm the oldest of three so I can't blame my siblings - lol. Can't even be near a hamster, gerbil or anything "rodent" looking. Am a cat lover though :-) Cool hub. Rock on!
very funny! I was the youngest and had 5 older brothers and sisters who made me the brunt of their jokes and the one to blame for things that went way wrong - so I know, I know! I think the worst thing about mice is their little skibbering feet! ewwwwww. . . also mice turds are so, well, you know, turdy!
Very cute story. I'm not afraid of mice, but I'm horrified or insects, especially roaches. I grew up in a tenement building in NYC and all the buildings had roaches. I remember as a child the exterminator would come once a month to spray all the apartments. The insecticide had a disgusting smell. I’ll never forget it. One night after such a visit, I woke to find several nasty bugs crawling on me. There were some more crawling up the wall and falling down, apparently dying from the bug spray. I screamed so loud it’s a wonder I didn’t wake up the whole neighborhood. I can’t stand the sight of the things now and bugs in general make me uneasy. It's probably why I never liked living in Texas or Florida, they have roaches the size of walnuts.
Amazing how a childhood experience can influence us the rest of our lives. I hate the little rodents! Not because I'm afraid they'll hurt me, but because they always dash out and scare the crap outta' me! Or worse, run across my foot, bare, and I can feel their feeble litte claws! Good story!
this is storytelling at it's best! great hub.
I'm afraid of mice because they could carry hantavirus. I'm researching the best trap to get and it looks like those electric traps are very effective.
Here's one I found that catches 10 mice before needing reset:
I could just picture you running about the house screaming along with your mother. Ha! Good fun!
Cute story.. its always so heart warming to recall childhood memories... The only pet I had in my life was a youngone of a hen. it was shoo cute..
hee hee...should have gotten the bunny. then Mom and Dad would have gone "aw, how cute" ;)
which is what i think of this story. rating UP. i have to confess i have never read you. now i will start!
What fun! I laughed all the way through it. Guess growing up with two brothers gave it such a deja vu feel!
Thank you for commenting on my hubs - I'm so glad I discovered yours!
Great story, Sean! Very funny. I grew up in a rural area where mice and other animals were common so I don't have any fear of them, but I can understand yours.
Love and peace
Tony
Great story and beautiful told:-) It brings back memories of my childhood! (some good lol)
Hi, ha ha love it! your brother must have gone on to be prime minister! how funny! I used to keep pet mice, we started with two females and ended up with a hundred babies!.... someone got their facts wrong! hee hee
Well OK, how could I resist? Very good story seanorjohn. I like the childs eye view of something as big as a sheep.
Pretty funny story. I wish I had a funny story to explain my phobias, but I honestly don't. To be honest, I'm not scared of mice per say, but I wouldn't want to own them as pets and I'd certainly try to avoid them if I saw them running rampant.
No, my biggest phobia is insects and spiders. Especially spiders, as there's something scary about a little eight legged creature with fangs and a million little eye balls. It's almost like something out of a damn monster movie except this one you know can really hurt you. I think my phobia of spiders may have started like when I used to live in Panama.
My father was in the Air Force, so we lived in Panama for a while. I remember once that I went with my mom to see one of her friends. I think I was like 5 or 6. I'm not sure. However, I remember looking up once and seeing a spider's web with a black widow in it. It was just right over her friend's front door of her apartment. Coincidentally, my class recently taught us what those were a few days prior to that visit, and i was too composed with fear as i looked up at it. I tried to tell my mom, but she was so busy talking to her friend. Luckily, my mom's conversation ended quickly with her friend, as i saw the spider slowly crawling down the door as we left. It was scary. If we had stayed even a minute longer, then we might've been bitten. I'm not sure if that's how my phobia got started, but they still scare the crap out of me to this day. Hell, even toy spiders that are made out of plastic scare me. Although ironically, my favorite superhero was always Spider-Man. lol Talk about ironic, huh?
Anyways, thanks for the great story, as I had a lot of fun reading this.
Very good story. Must have been quite memorable for you to have this amount of detail. I'm not so fond of mice, either. Blessings, Debby
Geewhiz! I get goosebumps just reading about your mice. I could write a hub on my experience. It's ridiculous how afraid I am of these little bitty creatures.

Big brothers...what fun you can have with them and what great, lasting impressions they leave upon you. You've me thinking about my own fear of insects, and I'm laughing at myself for I cannot help but wonder how such tiny creatures can scare me so!
