best ways to get rid of mice

Get rid of mice in the home

The best ways to get rid of mice in your home are often the most humane. Poison is not an option you should choose lightly. You could be risking your pets lives and your children's health could be affected. How would you cope with dead mice rotting away in inaccesssible places around the home? Old fashioned mouse traps are undoubtedly effective and relatively cheap. But not everyone feels comfortable collecting dead or half dead mice and then disposing of them.

Now, personally I have a totally irrational fear of mice, but I would feel bad about killing the things. Really, I would just want rid of them. Obviously, you could call out experts such as Rentokill and pay them approx £300 to deal with the problem. However, a much cheaper solution is to buy a humane ultra sound electronic device. You can buy these cheaply online or in many high street shops. If you have pet rats or gerbils ( shudder the thought) this will cause them distress, so this would not be an option in that case.

There are some ingenious mouse traps which use bait and then trap the mouse without killing them. You need to place them in places you know the mice are visiting. Before you do this you must of course cut off every source of food to these unwelcome visitors. All your food should now be placed in airtight containers. You will need to thoroughly clean behind the fridge, under the cooker and down the back and sides of armchairs and settee. Don't worry, no matter how many mice are in the house , you will get rid of every single one. The most effective bait seems to be peanut butter, chocolate, oats, nuts and berries.

Some imaginative people have successfully set up their own home-made devices using nothing more than a huge plastic bucket. They have smeared foodstuff such as peanut butter or chocolate around the top of the bucket and the mice topple in and are unable to climb out. You need to provide some dodgy steps up to the bucket to get the mice to fall in. This is not going to work fast enough if you haven't cut off the food supply.

Now when you have caught these live mice you have got to dispose of them. Obviously you don't want them coming back again so you need to let them off well away from your house. Experts suggest at least a quarter of a mile away and preferably one mile away.

Once you have dealt with the problem you need to plan how to make sure you don't get a new family of mice turning up to your house. Mice only need a 6mm gap (the size of a hole made by a pencil) to enter your house. So you need to block every gap you can find (except air vents). Mice really don't like peppermint so it's a good idea is to grow mint plants outside your house and even indoors. Soaking peppermint oil in cotton wool works as well but it is a bit of an eyesore. You can also buy plug in devices that release a peppermint odour but these need to be constantly refilled.

Humane mouse traps

Humane mouse traps are very effective and are an absolute bargain compared to bringing out the experts. I would advise everyone to purchase a patented humane mousetrap but to also experiment with your own homemade trap. Who knows you might get yours patented and make a fortune. Also if you ever get mice back you can quickly rig up your own trap.

One final piece of advice, make sure you use disposable gloves if you ever touch a dead mouse.

If you would like to read about my phobia of mice it is explained in why I am scared of mice.

glue traps - bad

I would strongly urge you not to use the glue trap boards. These are very inhumane. Many mice are only half killed by these devices and the mice take ages to die. If you want to kill mice then the old fashioned mouse traps are the cheapest and the most humane way of doing it.

Best guaranteed mouse trap is to obtain two blocks of wood, or plastic. Place mice between and press together. Works every time...

Get that idea patented, right away. Someone on the web is gonna steal this idea. No time to lose. Act now.

Great article. I'm not afraid of mice, but I sure don't want them in my home. I also don't like to kill them. We had an ingenious device made from some rabbit wire, a regular mouse trap, and an empty cottage cheese container. It worked great too. Caught the mouse, didn't kill it. I released it outside and I believe it promptly returned to experience the whole thing again. I realized I would have to release it further from my home. Eventually, I wore it down with sheer perseverance and it finally gave up. Whew.

Thanks karen, that device sounds intriguing. The return of the mouse conjures up a Hitchcockian nightmare. You need to do some research and file one of your ace reports on such a scenario.

@dallas93444: Your technique sounds efficient, economical, and effective. And gross.

Well done.

Great article, I have never heard of these types of mouse traps, it sounds like a much better alternative to actually killing the mouse.

Thanks Entourage. The glue traps sound horrific. I must try and track down a youtube video for the humane traps.

mice are a big pain in the neck once they get into the walls, gnawing away, it can drive one crazy!

Agreed Stacie, they certainly can drive you crazy. I once lived in a rented flat and couldn't sleep at night for hearing them . I threw things at the wall to encourage them to scurry off to a higher floor.

Very good, well thought-out tips. I like the bucket idea. I remember my mom just used to use my brother and I to get rid of mice because we'd catch them in the house and play with them - too much, I guess, because they never lived very long after we caught them :(

Thanks glassvisage. I guess I'll add breeding children and teaching them to catch mice to the list.

soj,so glad you wrote this hub. We recently discovered droppings in our home and weren't really sure if it's from a mouse, gecko or palmetto bugs. I keep a scented bar of soap in my bathroom drawer and something has been eating it and leaving droppings nearby. I'm thinking this must be a mouse that thinks the soap is cheese. It sounds funny but it's disgusting! Thanks for the tips, I'm going to try peppermint soap next apparently he likes the sandalwood scent.

Kstyle it's the not knowing what creature is about that would unnerve me. Hope you track down the critter.

Well, those two cats that guard the entrance to your profile page ... (the cats in your avatar!) ... just give them a day off and set them free in the critical areas and see the results!

I flipping hate mice! I've worked in a death-row prison and dealt with that fear fine, but let a mouse walk by and I'm an idiot. I've learned flour is one of the best ways to get a mouse to a trap, right behind moving. I personally don't care if the little sucker dies, I'm not going to touch it either way. I prefer not to kill things unnecessarily but if it comes into my home, it's like an intruder. Too bad for the little mousy.

I had an exterminator put glue boards in my basement and I really did not know how they worked. When I went to check, there were poor mice stuck there and still alive! I never used them again.

seanorjohn Hub Author 3 months ago

Alex, that sounds so horrible. The exterminator should have explained his methods beforehand.

Tams, I agree, little mousey is a real nuisance.

glensa 2 months ago

we had an exterminator who dumped the mice down the road. my neighbor saw him as he was leaving for work. i'd have been better off doing it myself because i would have killed them, not set them free.

The exterminator should not be dumping them in a street. Very anti- social.
